Tata Motors has announced that the Tata Aeris will hit the Indian roads on September 25. It is not an all-new car. The Aeris is a significantly revamped Tata Tigor with a new name and a new look for the sub-4 metre sedan.
Tata has dropped the Tigor name for what reason?
The re-brand seems purposeful. The Tigor and its electric counterpart were strongly associated with fleet and taxi duty over the years and the association remained. Tata’s teaser is a direct reference to this, as it portrays the Aeris as a departure from the boxed Tigor. There’s a larger hint as well. The Tigor was absent from the new brand campaign film Tata released last month for the Tiago, Altroz, Punch, Nexon, Curvv, Sierra, Harrier, and Safari. That’s the first indication of this rename now.
What changes on the exterior?
The design patent and teaser suggest slimmer headlamps, a revised grille, and bumper, linked tail lamps, a flat boot lid, and a new set of alloy wheels. The notchback shape is likely to remain the same, so this is not a complete redesign, but a more grown-up look. The styling will be largely the same as the recently updated Tiago hatchback.
Interior and Features Expected on the Tata Aeris
On the inside, you’ll find a new dashboard design around a 10.25-inch touchscreen that supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as a digital instrument cluster. A 360 degree camera and rear AC vents are also tipped. Safety-wise, six airbags are expected throughout the range, a significant improvement for those who are price-shopping the segment.
Engine and Price Details
The powertrain will remain the same as the previous Tigor with a choice of 1.2 litre, three-cylinder petrol engine, and 5-speed manual, and AMT transmissions with a factory-fitted CNG option for those looking for lower running costs. Tata has not offered a diesel version of this update.
There is no pricing information available. Tata will be announcing the complete variant lineup and pricing closer to the September 25 event, when buyers will have a better idea of how the Aeris compares to other compact sedans available.
