The launch of the Tekton was on July 9, 2026, and for those who have followed the brand in this segment over the past decade, the event feels like a familiar one. This will be the third attempt by Nissan to sell Indians a car that is based on the Renault-Duster-platform and the first two have been the same.
The Two Times Nissan Tried This Before
The Terrano
The Terrano was introduced in October 2013. It is based on the B0 platform, the same as the original Renault Duster. The first year of sales for the car were approximately 25,000. Those numbers were good. However, Nissan did not provide any significant update to the car. Rivals such as Hyundai Creta continued to receive new features, new engines, and new faces. The Terrano did not. In early 2018, the average monthly sales were 122 units. Nissan simply decided not to upgrade the BS6 emission norm in April 2020 when it was introduced. The investment was no longer worthwhile due to the sales.
The Kicks
The Kicks were released in January 2019, also from the B0 platform. Again, there was no real mid-cycle refresh. The Kicks sold an average of only 59 units in the six months before they were discontinued in April 2023, and had three months in a row without any dispatches. The BS6 Phase 2 and RDE norms came in April 2023 and the Kicks was quietly phased out. It was sold at a price of Rs 9.50 lakh to Rs 14.90 lakh at ex-showroom Delhi before it went off sale. The Kicks were stagnant, while Rivals had grown.
In both instances, the pattern was the same. Ageing shared platform. Around the price of the Renault sibling, but didn’t offer enough to warrant the premium. No major update was made and the competitors raced ahead. And eventually, killed by a new emissions deadline, not replaced proactively.
Why the Tekton Is Different – On Paper
The Tekton’s base is the newer and more modern CMF-B, as opposed to the base of the Terrano and Kicks. That’s important because the CMF-B was built with global standards from the beginning, allowing Nissan to have more flexibility to keep the car compliant as standards evolve.
The Tekton also has a confirmed export mandate. That is, the car will not be solely dependent on Indian sales, but will have to be compliant with global specs, which will force Nissan to invest in it properly over time, rather than letting it stagnate.
And the market has changed. The Terrano was introduced in 2013, a time when the compact SUV market was still in its infancy. Since then it has expanded by about threefold. Today there are many more buyers, making the investment case for a regular refresh much easier to make.
The answer to whether Nissan has finally gotten over the habit of walking away from a product it was never really all in will only come after the car has been on sale for a year or two and the first update is made or not.
