The 2026 Brezza facelift was launched on 24th July 2026 with an ex-showroom price of ₹7.40 lakh, which is the lowest price ever for the Brezza. The price drop is not a product decision. Much of it is due to a conscious engine swap to lower the Brezza’s GST rate.
The Engine Change That Changed the Game
The old Brezza was powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine – 1,500cc. This was the one thing that kept it away from the lowest slab of the GST for small cars in India. GST 2.0, which will be implemented from September 22, 2025, introduced a flat 18% GST rate for petrol vehicles under 4 metres with engines up to 1,200cc. The Brezza’s 1.5L engine was 300cc over that limit and therefore was ineligible.
The 1.5L Brezza, however, was placed in the “other vehicles” category and was charged a flat 40% GST. That’s still better than the old system – until September 22, 2025, the same car was taxed at 28% GST plus 17% cess, which amounted to a whopping 45% effective tax rate.
The 2026 Brezza facelift now features a new 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine, alongside the existing 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine. That puts it at less than 1,200cc, and thus falls under the 18% GST slab. That’s a 22 percentage point gap from the 1.5L version’s rate before the introduction of GST 2.0 – and a 27 percentage point gap from the previous regime before September 2025.
The Tax Gap in Rupees
This is the most obvious way to look at it. After the introduction of GST 2.0, the 1.5L Brezza has been priced at ₹8.26 lakh ex-showroom. The new 1.0L facelift starts at ₹7.40 lakh. This is a ₹86,000 difference at the bottom line. Part of that is due to product pricing, but the tax structure does the bulk of the work.
To give a number to it, if the pre-tax price of a car is ₹6.27 lakh, then the 18% GST would add approximately ₹1.13 lakh making the ex-showroom price ₹7.40 lakh. With the same base value, the ex-showroom price would be approximately ₹8.78 lakh at 40% GST, which is roughly ₹1.38 lakh more than just the GST at the base variant. The gap only increases with the higher variants.
How Rivals Were Already Winning This Game
This is where things get interesting. The Hyundai Venue and Tata Nexon are already in the 18% slab as both have sub-1,200cc turbocharged petrol engines and are below 4 metres. They have had this tax advantage since GST 2.0 came in. The 1.5L Brezza was running against them and was being sold at 40% GST which was a huge disadvantage at the showroom.
Maruti has now filled that void with the engine switch. The ₹7.40 lakh starting price is now at par with both the rivals on the GST front. The price range (₹7.40 lakh to ₹12.89 lakh ex-showroom) was announced by Maruti at the launch of the Brezza on July 24, 2026, and the pricing already indicates that the Brezza is ready to compete with the Venue and Nexon at most variant levels.
