The Kia Syros EV was launched on July 23, 2026, at ₹13.49 lakh; deliveries begin July 30, 2026. The ex-showroom price of the car is ₹13.49 lakh and it is said to be one of the first sub-4-metre electric cars in India with a claimed range of more than 500 km per charge.
Two Ways to Buy – and the Math That Matters
Kia is offering the Syros EV in two buying options. The first is an easy outright purchase at ₹13.49 lakh. The second is a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model, which involves paying less for the car, but paying a per-kilometre charge for the battery usage. With BaaS, the initial cost is reduced to ₹7.99 lakh and you pay ₹3.30 per km driven as a battery usage fee.
This is a truly novel concept for the Indian buyer and the numbers should be examined.
The Break-Even Calculation Indian Buyers REALLY Need
The majority of the coverage of BaaS has been limited to the numbers. No one has demonstrated where the two options actually intersect in total spend – the one thing a middle-class buyer making an EMI decision really needs to know.
Let’s look at the calculation at two realistic annual mileages:
At 15,000 km per year:

So, if you drive 20,000 km per year, the total cost of ownership of the car is the same as the cost of BaaS in about 8.3 years. That’s 15,000 km per year or more than 11 years. BaaS will almost certainly be cheaper for most buyers who retain their car for 5-7 years before replacing it. The outright buy only wins if you drive very high annual mileages and keep the car for a long time.
There’s one more thing to note. BaaS eliminates battery degradation liability for the owner. If the battery doesn’t perform up to scratch, it’s Kia‘s problem, not yours. That’s a valuable thing – EV battery replacement can be of several lakh rupees. When you factor that in, it makes BaaS even more appealing for the typical urban and semi-urban buyer who drives about 15,000 km per year.
Sub-4m, 500km Range: Why This Car Matters
