Mahindra has launched the Thar OG, the second update to the three-door Thar in just over a year at a starting price of Rs 10.32 lakh ex-showroom. Prices for the range go up to Rs 18.99 lakh depending on variant, engine, and drivetrain.
What’s New On The Thar OG
The biggest change is under the skin. The Thar OG now sits on the M_Glyde 4G platform, the same architecture that underpins the Thar Roxx. Mahindra says this brings higher structural stiffness than the outgoing model.
The suspension setup has also changed. The Thar OG gets a rear Pentalink suspension with a Watts Link, a first for the three-door Thar. The range-topping ZXT trim adds Frequency Dependent Damping, referred to as DAVINCI dampers for a plusher ride. Steering moves from a hydraulic setup to electric power steering which should make low-speed manoeuvring and parking easier.
Off-road hardware includes an Electronic Locking Differential along with dedicated Mud, Sand, and Snow terrain modes.
Engine And Variant Line-up
The Thar OG is offered in three trims, AXT, LXT, and the newly introduced ZXT. Engine choices remain the 1.5-litre diesel, 2.0-litre turbo petrol, and 2.2-litre diesel, but the petrol and larger diesel units get a power bump. The turbo petrol now makes 162hp and 330Nm while the 2.2-litre diesel makes 152hp and 330Nm. Only AXT variant offers entry level 1.5-litre diesel. It retains the same output of 117 hp and 300 Nm. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a 6-speed torque converter automatic available depending on variant. Buyers can choose between RWD and 4WD.
Safety Gets A Big Boost
Six airbags are now standard across the range along with disc brakes at all four wheels. The ESP suite also includes rollover mitigation, traction control, and hill hold control, marking a notable step up from the outgoing model.
What This Means For Buyers
Here is the detail most coverage is missing. The outgoing Mahindra Thar’s base AXT variant was priced at Rs 9.99 lakh ex-showroom through two separate price hikes earlier in 2026 in January and again in April, with both hikes applied only to LXT variants. The new Thar OG AXT now starts at Rs 10.32 lakh, just around Rs 33,000 more than what buyers have been paying for the outgoing base model all year. For that modest jump, buyers get a stiffer platform, a new suspension setup, six airbags as standard and all-wheel disc brakes, upgrades that were simply not available at this price point before.
The Thar OG is available in 8 colour options and comes with new 19-inch dual-tone alloy wheels along with revised tail lamp and bumper designs.
