The Octavia is now available with a self-charging strong-hybrid powertrain, which is a first for the brand worldwide. This is just European news, the Octavia equipped with this system is meant for markets such as the company’s home country, the Czech Republic, and no word on an India launch.

What the Hybrid System Actually Does

It’s a 1.5 TSI evo2 petrol engine mated to a 1.6kWh battery and a traction motor, and it’s actually more advanced than a standard mild hybrid. It operates in 4 modes: EV-only, series, parallel and mixed. The engine operates a generator motor which drives the traction motor in series mode. In parallel mode, both the engine and the traction motor are used to power the wheels, which is activated above 60kmph for maximum output. Depending on the tune, output is 134bhp or 167.5bhp, and as this is a strong hybrid, it doesn’t need to be plugged in anywhere, the battery will charge as you drive and use regenerative braking.

Why This Still Matters If You’re in India

Here’s the part that you should pay attention to even if there’s no India launch date. Skoda has not launched any hybrid model in India so far and the demand for hybrid in India has been rising steadily especially in compact SUV and sedan segment where the Kushaq and Kylaq are competing. Skoda, and thus the Volkswagen Group, now has this technology available for its strong-hybrid system, which is debuting on the Octavia. Whether it will arrive in India anytime soon or not is another matter, but it does answer one question clearly: the technology is there and Skoda is not sitting on the sidelines of the global trend towards robust hybrids.

What to Watch For

The Kushaq and Kylaq are the more likely contenders to be offered in India as a hybrid power car, as both are popular here, whereas the Octavia is not sold in India at all. For now, Indian buyers should consider this as a glimpse into the future of Skoda’s technology and not as a vehicle they can book anytime soon.
