MG has launched two new limited-edition versions of the Hector called Blackstorm and Snowstorm, both priced at a flat Rs 20 lakh ex-showroom. That figure is significant as it means that the STORM editions are ahead of the current range-topping Savvy Pro CVT which costs Rs 19.19 lakh. The price difference between MG’s own flagship and the new package is about Rs 81,000, and the buyers are primarily getting a cosmetic package.
What You Actually Get for the Extra Money
The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 140bhp and 250Nm is the same engine that has been used in the previous edition, and is mated only to a CVT in both editions. Externally, they feature a hex grille, bumper garnishes, Aura Storm blade alloy wheels, red brake calipers, dark chrome badge detailing, skid plates and body-side cladding. Inside, there’s a Nimbus Black cabin with Blackstorm or Snowstorm branding on the headrests and a gunmetal-finished leather steering wheel. MG is also offering a free STORM package, which includes additional badges, red accents around the fog lamps and ORVMs, and side step boards.
This does not affect the engine, transmission or safety gear. It remains to be seen if features that come standard on the Savvy Pro, such as Level 2 ADAS, the 360-degree camera, and the powered tailgate, are included in these editions, so it’s important to know before paying the extra price.
A Limited Run, Not a New Variant
These aren’t permanent lineup additions. Some of the pricing is a bit logical, and some of it isn’t, but both the Blackstorm and Snowstorm are confirmed limited production runs, so that’s part of the reason why they’re priced the way they are.
Official Word on the Launch
In his speech on the launch, Vinay Raina, Chief Commercial Officer, JSW MG Motor India, said the Hector has been synonymous with the MG brand in India and is constantly evolving to meet the changing aspirations of the customers, and the STORM series is a more assertive statement of style and individuality.
Should You Pay the Premium
The STORM series may be worth the extra cash if you value styling exclusivity and were already thinking about a top-spec Hector. If you’re looking for features and safety kit, however, it’s important to verify exactly what you’re getting for the price before spending more than MG’s top-of-the-range version on mostly a facelift.
