The Hyundai Venue diesel automatic has a mileage of 17.9 kmpl, but in real terms, the numbers translate into a different figure once you put it in rupees. The difference between claimed and tested mileage of hyundai venue is not a spec sheet item, it’s a real-world fuel cost item.

The Test Numbers

This Venue is fitted with a 1.5-litre diesel engine and automatic gearbox. In city driving, it achieved a fuel consumption of 79.7 km/7.21 litres, which is 11.05 kmpl, near the car’s own MID value of 11.50 kmpl. On the highway, it traveled 90.4 km on 5.34 litres and achieved a performance of 16.93 kmpl, which is less than the MID of 17.7 kmpl. Add both runs together and the average real world mileage is 12.51 kmpl.

What Does This Mean for Your Wallet?

The current price of diesel in Delhi is Rs 95.20 per litre. This translates to an estimated cost of Rs 5.32 per km at the claimed 17.9 kmpl and Rs 7.61 per km at the tested combined average of 12.51 kmpl. The difference works out to nearly Rs 3400 more per month than the claimed figure for a car that is driven 1500km per month.

Buyers will need to pay special attention to the city numbers. The 11.05 kmpl achieved in the test is almost 38% less than the claimed 17.9 kmpl in city driving. Highway mileage fared much better, being within about 5% of the claimed mileage. Owners who drive primarily in the city should expect to pay significantly more than the advertised price, and owners who drive more on the highway will be much closer to the advertised price.

The Takeaway

Claimed mileage is a good way to compare cars on paper, but it doesn’t always accurately predict what you’ll pay at the pump, particularly in city driving. In the real world, the figures indicate that those who purchase the Venue diesel automatic should expect to get around 11 to 13 kmpl as opposed to the claimed 17.9 kmpl, especially if they spend most of their time driving in the city.
